Chemical Composition and in Vitro Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity of Essential Oils from Different Parts of Chimonanthus praecox (Linn.) Link

OBJECTIVE To study the chemical composition and antibacterial and antifungal activity of essential oil in root, leaf and peel of Chimonanthus praecox (Linn.) Link. METHODS The essential oils from the three parts were extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Then the antibacterial and antifungal activities of the essential oils were tested by double dilution and mycelial growth method respectively. RESULTS A total of 37, 48, 38 components from the essential oil of the root, leaf, and peel of this plant were identified. There were 15 components in common, which accounted for 84.05%, 36.83%, 64.46% of the total essential oil in each organ, respectively. The bacteriostatic test showed that the essential oils from different parts of C. praecox (Linn.) Link had different inhibitory effects on the tested strains. CONCLUSION The essential oil of the root contains many bioactive components and has strong antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria as well as pathogenic fungus, which reveals high medicinal value and drug development prospect.
