Study on the Safety of Antiepileptic Drugs during Pregnancy

    • Pregnant women taking antiepileptic drugs(AEDs) has an important impact on pregnancy outcomes. Exposure to AEDs such as valproate, phenytoin sodium and carbamazepine can increase the risk of neonatal congenital malformations. It has been shown that intrauterine AEDs exposure may be associated with cognitive developmental impairment and may have a long-term effect on neurodevelopment of neonatal. Multidrug combination and high dose AEDs may increase fetal teratogenic risk. This article reviews the teratogenicity risk of traditional and new AEDs during pregnancy.
